“Service and the Subconscious”
It is easy to say no. It is easy not to take risks. It is easy to expect others to lead us. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Change doesn’t have to be feared; in fact it can become a regular part of your organization’s workflow. This session will explore ways that staff at all levels can be empowered and contribute to the growth of your library. By reframing our service outlook, we can unleash transformative thinking resulting in more memorable and positive patron experiences.

Learning to Emerge: 10 Things I’ve Learned About Library Leadership
You read the literature. You attend the leadership institutes. You take the management courses. Check, check, and check. But the reality is that nothing can prepare you for leadership like taking the reins, leading a project/team/department, and learning from your mistakes. This session will outline 10 things I’ve learned from doing just that and the impact these leadership lessons have had on staff, administration, and most importantly, our users.

“10 Years, 4 Libraries, 2 Office Moves, and 1 Staff Retreat Later: A Leader Emerges”
How do we find motivation when we start to run low? How do we move people to act? No one understands these concepts better than a person in a leadership position. But, what does it take to become a good leader? What kinds of decisions and experiences shape today’s library leaders? Is there any one correct way to grow the future leaders of our profession? Laugh and cringe as I recount my personal leadership journey. Learn from my mistakes and my triumphs and find out what it is really like to motivate, encourage, support, and manage your colleagues. Ultimately, success will be in how well you motivate yourself and the effect that has on those around you.

“I Can’t Believe He Did That…Again”
Our ability to lead effectively is primarily a function of our ability (or inability) to manage relationships in the workplace – relationships with those at all levels of the organization, those external to it, and to our organizational and professional personae. Our ability to effectively manage professional relationships at all of these levels is supported and undermined through word and deed: what we say and do in countless day-to-day interactions with employees, colleagues, superiors, and external stakeholders. Using scenarios taken from experience, this presentation will discuss how inattention to growing an effective “organizational understanding” through effective relationship management can undermine our efforts as leaders and change agents within our organizations.
